A Challenge to Feminists (continued from page 6)
toward women-personally destroy their own health and damage the health of others. What is the purpose of our fight for some of the goals of feminism: the right to decent health care and information; an end to sterilization abuse; unwanted, unplanned, or compulsive pregnancy; unnecessary surgery; alcoholism and other drug dependency; physical and psychological abuse; radiation from nuclear power plants? I believe it is, in part, a collective yearning of women to control our bodies, our lives, ourselves, Doing whatever we can on a personal level to determine our own health and our own environment is one of the few means of direct control we have.
Most of us are aware the tobacco industry knows full well the addictive and lethal properties of their drug. Yet they spend enormous sums of money on research into people's behavior and the motivation of smokers to encourage them, through advertising, to buy their products. How can feminists reconcile their goal of self-determination with their willingness to be manipulated by the advertising and tobacco industries? How can they ignore their heavy financial support of the tobacco industry while protesting nuclear power plants, or supporting boycotts against companies that foist bottle-feeding on mothers in Third World countries?
I have not talked about the reasons people smoke cigarettes. Many feminists who smoke can explain their emotional, psychological and social reasons, or their physiological drives perpetuated by the pharmacological effects of nicotine on their central nervous system. These reasons are complex and make the habit excruciating painful to break. But women have been told long enough they are weak creatures incapable of exercising enough control over

themselves to end their victimization. Women have been told they could not accomplish difficult tasks. many times before. I disagree. The complexity of a smoking habit does not mean women cannot break it. I have faith it is something women can do. I hope most feminists agree.
The Courage (continued from page 6)
statistically the ones who are shying away from parenthood.
Women possess this amazing ability to grow children--attached in a unique love-bond. We do not have to accept that we are giving up our lives. We are expanding our life experience and we will have the best of all worlds-no matter how hard we have
to fight for it! It is so important for us to recognize that motherhood can be just another way to affirm ourselves as women-and not the prison patriarchal society would have it be.
I will continue to fight the socialization, as we all must, to not deny ourselves anything we want and deserve out of fear. I will keep my career alive and growing and raise a child to the best of my ability. I will demand that my mate take at least equal responsibility for this child. I will make it!
